Brett is a character from Matt Furie's "Boy's Club" comic — the same comic that gave the world Pepe the Frog. Brett is the blue, chilled-out character often seen in his underwear. The $BRETT token launched on Coinbase's Base chain in early 2024 and quickly became its dominant meme coin, reaching a $2 billion market cap. It benefited from being the "Pepe of Base" at a time when the Base ecosystem was rapidly growing. The connection to Matt Furie's original art gave it cultural legitimacy that most meme coins lack. BRETT proved that the Boy's Club universe had more meme coin potential beyond just Pepe, and established Base as a legitimate meme coin chain alongside Solana and Ethereum.
